![]() Read: Logitech Brio 500 Review Best Webcam for Content Creators If you plan on zooming in to crop out your background, you may prefer the 2K WB5023 Dell Pro Webcam, which is similarly priced to the Brio 500 and also offers impressive out-of-the-box performance. Most web conferencing apps limit your streaming resolution to 1080p or 720p, but that doesn’t mean a webcam with a higher resolution is wasted. For the average person looking to upgrade their webcam from whatever’s built into their laptop’s bezel, the Logitech Brio 500 offers the best out-of-the-box performance at a reasonable price ($130). The Logitech Brio 500 shows that resolution isn’t everything - it may have the same surface-level specs as older Logitech webcams, such as the C920s and C930e, but it produces much better images. Logitech’s RightLight 4 technology, which is designed to compensate in less-ideal lighting situations, did an excellent job of producing flattering, evenly-lit images in both low- and overexposed-lighting conditions. We were especially impressed with the Brio 500’s auto-white balance, which is something almost all webcams struggle with - it wasn’t perfect, but it was almost as impressive as the auto-white balance seen on much pricier webcams, such as the Insta360 Link. We've tested dozens of webcams, inspecting build quality, capturing photos in a variety of common lighting conditions, and playing with settings and software to determine the best webcam for you - whether you're trying to appear professional while working from home in sweatpants, or creating content for millions of viewers. Plus, if you've never looked at a close-up of your face in ultra-high-def 4K video - trust me, you don't want to. Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.) don't support higher than 720p or 1080p video anyway. And it's not as easy as going for the highest specs: most of the common video conferencing platforms (e.g. It's impossible to recommend one or two perfect webcams for all users, because there are so many different ways to use webcams these days. Today's webcams range from standard HD (1080p) to 4K resolution and have increasingly larger lenses and sensors, and many feature impressive internal AI-powered tech that can do everything from improving low-light performance to tracking face and body movement. The good news is that the external webcam market also looks like it'll stick around - the pandemic spawned a slew of new webcams (and webcam makers) and spurred innovation. And while we're slowly returning to offices in the post-pandemic era, it looks like remote working is likely to stick around (at least part-time). But since the pandemic made remote working routine, the market for external webcams has exploded. They weren't good, but we didn't use them enough to care. ![]() Pre-pandemic, webcams were mostly an afterthought - built into your laptop's bezel as a convenience, nothing more.

![]() “The gas hung in a thick pall over everything, and it was impossible to see more than ten yards,” wrote one British officer at Loos. ![]() ![]() The Royal Engineers released chlorine gas an hour before the infantry was scheduled to attack, but the winds shifted, sending clouds of chlorine back toward the British line and forming a toxic fog in no man’s land. In late September 1915, the British tried to give the Germans a dose of their own medicine at the Battle of Loos, with little success. “The British policy was to respond in kind to German gas attacks but never to escalate the war,” says Dorsey. He founded Porton Down, a research facility in the English countryside dedicated to defending Allied troops against gas attacks and stockpiling their own gas weaponry for use against the Germans. Kitchener wasted no time in developing Britain’s own chemical arsenal. If the Germans were going to sink as low as to use gas, then why should the Allies take the high ground? Soon after French made his public statement about the barbarity of German gas attacks, he wrote a private cable to Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War: “We are taking every precaution we can think of but the most effective would be to turn their own weapon against them & stick at nothing.” It wasn’t long before British military officers like the French changed their stance on chemical warfare. It was not a practical proposition at all.” And could only put the thing back again for very short periods. “I found that in using it in the gas cloud that after a couple of minutes one couldn’t breathe and so it was pushed up over the forehead and we swallowed the gas. A stretcher bearer at Ypres named William Collins described the pads as more suffocating than the gas: Sir John French, commander in chief of the British Expeditionary Force, decried the attack as evidence of German barbarity: “All the scientific resources of Germany have apparently been brought into play to produce a gas of so virulent and poisonous a nature that any human being brought into contact with it is first paralyzed and then meets with a lingering and agonizing death.”īefore British troops received proper gas masks with rubber seals called box respirators, they were equipped with stop-gap solutions, like thick gauze pads that were strapped tightly over the mouth. But did they violate the spirit of the ban? Absolutely.” “Did technically violate the Hague Convention,” which only specifically banned projectiles filled with poison gas? “No. The British reaction to the German gas attack was “outrage,” says Marion Dorsey, a history professor at the University of New Hampshire and author of A Strange and Formidable Weapon: British Responses to WWI Poison Gas. Many of the deaths occurred when panicked victims rushed to drink water for relief from the burning gas, which only made the chemical reaction worse, flooding their throats and lungs with hydrochloric acid. None of the British soldiers at Ypres had gas masks, resulting in 7,000 injuries and more than 1,100 deaths from chlorine gas asphyxiation. You see if you got to the bottom of the trench you got the full blast of it because it was heavy stuff, it went down.” Well then of course you immediately began to choke, then word came: whatever you do don’t go down. But immediately it got there we knew what to think, I mean we knew what it was. It wasn’t very high about I would say it wasn’t more than 20 feet up. “he next thing we heard was this sizzling-you know, I mean you could hear this damn stuff coming on-and then saw this awful cloud coming over. British officer Martin Greener described the horror of that first large-scale gas attack to the Imperial War Museum. After early failed efforts by the French and German armies to use tear gas and other irritants in battle, the first successful gas attack was launched by the Germans against the British at the Second Battle of Ypres on April 22, 1915.Īs the battle began, the Germans released 170 metric tons of chlorine gas from more than 5,700 cylinders buried in a four-mile line across the front. Yet from the very start of World War I, both the Allies and Central Powers deployed noxious gasses to incapacitate the enemy or at least strike fear into their hearts. ![]() At the dawn of the 20th century, the world’s military powers worried that future wars would be decided by chemistry as much as artillery, so they signed a pact at the Hague Convention of 1899 to ban the use of poison-laden projectiles "the sole object of which is the diffusion of asphyxiating or deleterious gases." Grid System Makes Easy CollaborationĪs mentioned earlier, grids help establish the structure of a design. If you don’t align your copy, the viewer will easily notice that your designs appear to be more cluttered and messy. The type sits on a narrow horizontal line that runs across the page similar to ruled lines of a notebook. ![]() Baseline grids are essential when designing the body copy. This will help to enhance the readability and legibility of the content. If you are working with text-heavy content, it is better to have a grid system in place. This also enables designers to create pixel perfect design from the very beginning. When it comes to UI design, grid systems can help manage the proportion between the margins and ensure the spacing and margins are set correctly. Besides helping you make better layout decisions, they also act as a foundation to help you build a better design. Instead of manually trying to find a place for a design element on a page, grids can help you make informed choices about their placement, scale etc. When it comes to designing a layout, grids help you do just that. We are always looking to get things done quicker and more effectively. Using them makes it easier for the viewer to find the next piece of information as well. This is especially true when they are used in digital products. An effective grid guides the eye of the user through various elements of the interface. This rule holds true when a grid system is applied to an interactive interface as well. Using them ensures clarity and consistency. By doing this, you are bound to create a neat, clean and organize layout. Be that your type, imagery, or any other elements in your design. When choosing a grid system, make sure to choose one that would work different elements in your design. When you establish a grid system, you are setting up a structure for the elements in your design to align against. One of the main reasons for a grid is to keep the different elements in a design organized. In this article, we will discuss the many uses of a grid system and the reasons why it would improve your design process This way you are able to structure the content and scale it across various devices and platforms. ![]() To create enjoyable and delightful digital experiences, you have to be able to understand how to use grids effectively. It is one of the most effective ways to organize content on a page. About 90% of all the interactions are done using a screen. One last consideration is that most lock system will not allow a very deep cut next to a very shallow cut. In a five pin master key system, using four change key cuts per space the total number of individual keys can be determined by the formula four (cuts) raised to the fifth power (spaces) equal 1024 total individual key cuts. When all five spaces have been rotated the final cut number would be 45552 according to the KBA and no further individual keys cuts are available. Cut numbers from other columns do not change at this time. The master key cut is a "1" cut, so there are four available numbers which can be rotated- 2/3/4/5. In the chart one example, rotation "1" is in the third space. While master key numbering systems are generated in a similar fashion, there are usually approximately only four choices of numbers which can be used for rotation. In the vehicle example, when the SOP number reaches "99999" no additional numbers are available without causing duplicate numbers. SOP in a vehicle odometer can be thought of as 54321 where the right dial is constantly rotating and the left dial changes least often. Uniformly, rotation "3" begins changing each time rotation "2” reaches "9", rotation "4" begins changing each time rotation "3" reaches "9" and rotation "5" changes each time rotation "4 reaches "9". Rotation "2" changes each time rotation "1" returns to the "0" position and starts to rotate again through the numbers. As the vehicle moves ahead, rotation "1" constantly changes from "0" through "9". Vehicle odometers operate in units of 10. SOP can be readily explained by studying the odometer in any vehicle. The bottom row shown in red shows the sequence of progression (SOP) for this master key system. Chart 1 shows an example KB A with the top row showing the masterkey cuts- 11111, and the vertical rows showing the change key cuts to be used with each masterkey cut. Terms used in this article may not conform to tightly held terms used by others but are meant to provide the simplest explanation of a complex subject. Building any master key system begins with a plan, often called a key bitting array (KBA). |
